H.L. Runion, Sr. aka Ol' Papy

I bet many of you know this place....

Taken at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia, VA this past summer (Summer 2012) www.dvs.virginia.gov/

I am a 74 years young and love to ride my bike all over the country. I love to get out and see the great sites that God created for us to enjoy. In 2006 I rode out to Vegas for the first time and came back through St. Louis, MO. In 2009 I went to Yellowstone National Park and saw the Old Faithful through the Bad Lands and across Bear Tooth Pass into Montana. In 2010 I became a certified member of the IronButte Association when I rode 1,065 miles in 17 hrs and 8 minutes. What a fast ride that was! Looking foward to many more good rides this summer!

Ol' Papy-I do have a lot stories & by seeing & reading your profile I am sure you have as many. Congrats on your IBA, got mine in 2010 BB, 1674 miles in 32 hrs 10 min. NOt quie with you in yrs, got my first bike in '58, never stopped, 600000 miles on 27 bikes. If we should ever meet I'll bet we could trade a lot of stories-they always get better with age.

Congrats on your IBA and I agree, I bet we would have lots of stories to trade. Never know, one day we may cross paths and maybe even take a ride together. I see you are in Oklahoma. It's a beautiful part of the country. Take care and keep riding!

This is Michelle Runion. I am H.L's granddaughter. I remember when my grandpa and I rode his bike all the way from Blackstone, Virginia to Titusville, Florida (approximately 750 miles). What is normally a 11-12 hours ride ended up taking us about 15 hours due to rainy weather. We left early in the morning where it was a little cold, but it was a beautiful day. Once we got to South of the Border we started getting hard rain. We stopped on the side and put our rain gear on, and back on the road we went. Then miles later, the sun came out, and we were burning up in the rain gear so we stopped and took it off. Next thing we knew, it was raining again! So we did it all over again. But, we finally made it, enjoyed our time with my father, and rode all the way back home.

That was a very long trip, but I enjoyed it, and it is one of my favorite memories that I have with my grandpa. I had only rode a motorcycle for a couple of hours at a time with my father, and this was when I was very small so this trip was a new experience for me. When I tell people that I rode that far on a bike, they say I am crazy. But, I would never take it back. Hopefully Ol Pappy & I can make another long bike trip sometime soon!

Love you, Pa!

On August 21, 2015 we went to West Virginia on a ride with Hoagy Carmichael, founder of Hoagy's Heroes out of Moundsville, WV. We rode for a good cause...500 mile ride for Autism. We traveled a total of 1,550 miles through three states including West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Returned home via the scenic route of 33 and 119. A beautiful ride worth taking anytime. The return trip took us approximately nine hours and approximately seven gallons of gas. Enjoyed the company of Dan Dunaway and Donnie Edgerton and Hoagy and all of his friends.

The best of the best. These folks have ridden and shared more roads than any other ORJ member this month.
