What's in my Garage? 1998 Yamaha YZF R1

Long term rider with longer term goals

On my latest R1 at Rockingham, UK. This bike is currently in the middle of a complete rebuild. I hope it's the middle anyway...

I've been riding since my first Honda SH50 when I was 16, which burnt the clutch after 2 weeks. I'm now 31 and while hopefully slightly better at riding, I'm certainly no better at purchasing motorcycles.

I've owned far too many motorcycles for my wallet to handle, and I tend to buy them in two ways:
Some arrive in pieces, in a box. At this point I usually harbour delusions that I can rebuild the pieces into a fully restored bike. This rarely happens and at some point, a few months later, someone will offer me a pitiful sum for the box, which I will instantly accept.
However the majority arrive in a fairly usable condition. I usually then do a small job, such as a battery swap-out, which leads me to noticing that perhaps the fuel lines could do with replacing. This continues in this fashion until I end up with the motor dropped, or the gearbox dissembled and the motorcycle ends up leaving my ownership for half the price I paid for it, in a box.
Every time this happens I promise myself that next time I'll buy a sensible, used bike from a dealer, and leave it alone...

I currently own a pair of privately bought 1998 R1's. The first is set up for trackdays, while the other is in the middle of a 4 year (and counting) rebuild...

Although born and raised in the UK, I'm now living in Perth, Western Australia. Next year I'll be in New Zealand and when I'm done there, who knows?

I've travelled extensively around Europe on bikes, pretty much everywhere excepting Scandinavia and Portugal. I've nothing against either, just never ended up there.
At some point I'd like to head further afield, maybe around the world.

The aftermath of a fairly substantial wipeout. I'm the dazed looking guy next to the crunched R1.

In the background, this was my favourite R1. I crashed (see above) and repaired it, and then set off across Europe on it.

Riding a rented XT660 in Tenerife. I don't like renting bikes, the burden of responsibility wears heavily on my shoulders.

find more great motorcycle roads...

The best of the best. These folks have ridden and shared more roads than any other ORJ member this month.
