Have made this trip so many times I remember all 6 trees between Woodward and Clayton. would have rated it a 2 1/2 but that was not an option. I always enjoyed this trip going west because it meant I had escaped Tulsa and the mountains were waiting. You don't want to be riding this in August or late July in the middle of the day. It is hot. Tulsa to Woodward is just clicking off the miles. Woodward to Boise City makes you think John Wayne will ride off one of the Buttes and cross the road in front of you as he chases some bad guys. From Boise City west you start out seeing jack rabbits, especially after dark, and as you get into NM antelope will dote the grassland on either side of the road and the wide open spaces will entice your imagination of times past. Two thoughts here. 1-ON the return trip, allow an extra 30 minutes and take 72 East out of Raton to 456 and then 370 to Clayton. This will give you an entirely different point of view and you will see the mountain range and game management area. 2-Go west out of Raton and ride up to Red River NM and if time permits, west to Taos. You will love it.
