A scenic ride in the Catskills ending at the Ashokan Dam (west side). The destination itself is about a 1/3 mile walk across the top of the dam that is closed to automobiles. Viewing the surrounding mountains and waterways reminds you of just how small you really are and not a hint of civilization can be seen except for the dam itself and a few houses in the far distance. It's a destination to nowhere sort of thing. The map listed here shows one way from Hackettstown, NJ, which is about 100 miles. The west side dam parking lot is technically on Rt 28A. Follow 28A left or right from the damn and both ways will reach Rt 28 (which has gas stations and small eateries). Being that it is the Catskills, some of the roads be absent of gas stations for about 15-20 miles at a time, so don't push your luck if you're running low. I just got back and it took about 7 hours (walking the dam and a burger at a diner). My path does go through a couple of towns (Newton, Port Jervis, etc.), so I would advise not doing this on a weekday. From Wikipedia:'The Ashokan Reservoir is a reservoir in Ulster County, New York, USA. The reservoir is in the eastern end of the Catskill Park, and is one of several reservoirs created to provide the City of New York with water. However, it is one of only two reservoirs in the Catskill Watershed. It is also New York City's 2nd deepest reservoir behind Pepacton, being over 190 feet (58.5 m) deep at its deepest.'
