A scenic drive with some few boringly straight sections but not too many. Leave Alpine with a full tank! See gas, buy Gas! A side trip into the National park (route not shown) will cost $10 but it's worth a look see while you are there. Go to the Basin and the Ross Maxwell Scenic drive if you go into the park. The River Road leaving Lajitas going west to Presidio is the highlight of the ride. If you stop at the "Big Hill", park carefully in gear, easy place to drop a heavy bike. Not a Summer road trip, April through September can be deadly hot. May and June usually the worst for heat. Enroute food and gas available in Study Butte, Presidio, and Marfa. Side trip into the park food at Basin Lodge restaurant, gas at Panther Junction (usually higher priced than Study Butte).
You will have to stop at a U.S. Border patrol check point on the way back to Marfa. Don't be carrying stuff that the dogs can sniff
out or other questionable items. Usually just a question or two ( Are you a U.S. citizen? Where were you coming from?) and you're on your way. Carry plenty of water,(3 liters per person) if broke down, water and shade can be essential for daytime survival. I gave the overall description as rolling hills, that would be just because the interesting parts are hilly, but there is plenty of flat as well. On a side trip to the Basin in the park, there is a first gear uphill inside lane hairpin turn. You don't want to be searching between 2nd and 3rd when your in the middle of it.
