June 21, 2008. Las Cruces-Lordsburg, CliftonSince temps were +105 we left the house at 5:30am.We wanted to get to the Arizona mountains while the temp was tolerable. From Clifton on 191 the fun begins. Scenic views of one of the largest open pit mines in the world. This is where the twistys began. Climbing up the mountains from 3,500' to 9,000'. 100 miles of beautiful forest & vistas. Stopped in Alpine at the Bear Wallow Cafe. Don't miss this excellent food. During lunch it started raining. From Alpine all the way back to Deming it was from drizzle to torrential downpour to hail & 45 mph winds. But since we were on our bikes it was better than the best day at work. Next time I want to make it a 2 day trip to have more time to enjot the mountains.
