This is a four-day trip. It is just a great romp through one of the best part of Texas. Once you're out of San Antonio, stop at Haby's Alsatian Bakery in Castroville for kolaches and coffee. From there it's pretty uneventful to Del Rio, try Don Marceleno's for lunch. Once you've passed through the Lake Amistad area you'll start to feel you're 'out west'. Watch your fuel levels. Be sure to pull over at the Pecos River observation area, super views of the bridge and river. Once you're officially 'west of the Pecos' your next stop is Langtry, home of Judge Roy Bean. You'll stop for the night in Marathon, say it as Marathun. A variety of lodging is there from basic to fancy. The next morning have breakfast at Shirley's Burnt Biscuit, then head into the Big Bend Nat'l Park. As you descend into the Basin take it easy, it's a little twisty and there can be traffic. From there it's on to Terlingua, an old quicksilver mining town and home to the chili cookoffs. Grab something cold, buy a funky t-shirt and sit on the porch awhile. If you're still there for dinner the Starlight Theater is fantastic, great food in a very laid-back atmosphere. Down the road a bit is Lajitas, there's lodging and food there, too. The next day you're on an amazing route along the Rio Grande river to the town of Presidio, where you'll swear you've crossed the border somewhere. Turn north and you're on a pretty straight shot to Marfa and Fort Davis, again lodging and great food are easy to find. I-10 is the straightest shot home. I recommend going to www.visitbigbend.com for all the details. You will love the Big Bend!
