Big Bend Ride 2008
- Distance: 909 miles / 1462.9 km
- Ride Time: 3 days
- Approximate Fuel Costs: $69.08
- States Visited: New Mexico, Texas
Best time of year for this ride is probably March-early May. It gets real hot later than that.I avoid interstates when possible. It's not possible on this ride for the first 150 mi.After that it gets enjoyable. Terlingua is an interesting old mining town. We spent the 1st nite in a cabin @ Easter Egg Valley. Accomodations, fuel & food are readily available all along the way. Some of the don't miss areas are all of Big Bend Park, especially Chisos Basin. Going west from Big Bend to Presidio is 'The River Road'. This is a great ride. It follows along the Rio Grande River. Lots of up-down & curves. On the right is the USA on the left, across the river is Mexico. Many movies are shot in this area. We saw people floating the river. The closer you get to Presidio the curves end & the elevation flatens.Going north towards Marfa & Ft Davis is a wide nice road but does have gentle curves & elevation changes. We stayed in Ft Davis 2nd nite. Visited McDonald Observatory. Worth the time. Watch for Suicide Pigs (Javalina)there everywhere & you will soon see where they got their name. The Ft Davis Loop is a real fun ride. Then its back to the high flat desert back home.

The best of the best. These folks have ridden and shared more roads than any other ORJ member this month.
