Amazing! I've ridden this section of Hwy 1 multiple times, North and South on both of my bikes. Being that it's such a famous stretch of road that draws so much traffic it can be frustrating when stuck behind those motorhomes and cars that are more interested in taking pictures from out their windows than paying attention to the road. Therefore, you have to know the best time to ride.

My latest ride of this route was unplanned. I happened to be around Santa Cruz on a saturday with nothing to do and 2 days off so around 3 in the afternoon I decided to cruise to San Luis Obispo for the night. The traffic was thick all the way to Carmel but thinned out as I got up into the hills because it was getting late. It didn't take long for me to realize I was suddenly in a race against daylight. I counted only 5 cars that I had to pass in the entire 80 miles along the coastline. The road was open and free of cops, luckily. The sun had finally set by the time I was pulling in to Cambria but the clear skies and setting sun over the water was unforgettable.

This ride is full of elevation changes, sweeping turns, and twisties. I've been down the entire coastline from Astoria, OR to San Diego but this stretch is by far my favorite. If you haven't had the pleasure of riding the west coast of the United States, DO IT!
