This is a nice unhurried ride that can be done in as little as about four hours, or can go for much longer if you do what I did and take your time along the way, you could easily stretch this into an overnight excursion, as there is so much to see in Gettysburg.
I took a rest stop at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, picked up a map and decided to follow the Auto Tour route.
The Gettysburg Auto Tour is well-marked and takes you through the town of Gettysburg and then to 16 key points related to the battle at Gettysburg. It is a beautiful and thought provoking and leisurely drive. For most of it you will rarely get out of second or third gear and there are numerous places of interest to stop at along the way.
On the way out of town I noticed a small barbecue place on Rt 134 (Taneytown Rd). I turned around and had a very tasty pulled pork BBQ sandwich. They have a special for $8.99 that gives you a sandwich (choice of pork, chicken or beef), and order of fries and a canned drink (or bottled water). Definitely nothing fancy, but it really hit the spot for me (I'm a sucker for smoked meat, and this was fresh and juicy).

Taking a different route home, I decided to take the Rt 77 exit and headed West on a lovely, hilly, forested, drive, that had sections with streams running beside the road. There are some twisty turns on the route with two of them with a posted speed of 15 MPH, but most of the twistier turns were in the 25 to 35 MPH range There was also a several mile stretch at 50 posted speed. Overall, one of the best parts of the day's ride. When I got to Rt 64, I simply turned around and took the same route back through Thurmont. One thing I love about mountain roads is that even though you are following the same route each direction is a different experience.
The rest of the way back was very enjoyable with lots of farmland and a nice vistas along the way.
