Took this route over Labor Day weekend 2012.Left Denver and headed out west on I70, after going through the Eisenhower tunnel, get ready to exit at Silverthorne. Take a right, then head north up CO 9. At Kremmling, CO, take US 40 north and west all the way to Steamboat Springs via the Rabbit Ears pass. Go on over to Craig Colorado if you need to go to a Super Walmart. Took about 3 hours or so.On the return, to avoid major stop and go traffic on I70 on Monday, Labor Day, take US 40 all the way from Steamboat Springs through Kremmling, then through Hot Sulpher Springs (canyon is beautiful), on to Granby, then Winter Park, CO. You'll now get to climb a really nice hill with switchbacks, and then descend down to Empire, CO. We continued on US40 watching the stop and go traffic on I70. At Idaho Springs, get back on I70 and continue out of the mountain. Be sure to use your engine gears to control your descent speed, no need to overheat the brakes.Enjoy the ride!
