I have always loved route 8 thru southern Mass, but I recently have been able to explore east and west of it and it's time to share. There is a gas station at the 8/20 intersection USE IT. I fill up grab a coffee and go. route 20 thru Riverton and then thru the forest. Follow the signs to Grainville route 189 (these are very narrow and twisty backroads). Go west on 57 then north on School House Road, it runs into 23.Head west until you run into 57. That brings you back to 8. I have seen little traffic on these roads. At the 23/57 intersection, a llama farm. These are country roads run 'em hard.

We did this scenic New England ride on a 70 degree sunny day on 10/28/2010 starting around noon. FANTASTIC!!! The foliage was a bit past peak but still awesome. We did the loop in a clockwise direction starting at the "New Boston Inn" at the Rt.57/8 junction (newbostoninn.com) instead of counter clockwise because we wanted to stop for lunch. Excellent place to eat and VERY friendly people. This place deserves it's own rating which is very high in my opinion. The only thing we'll do different the next time we do this ride, and we definitely will, is by-pass Schoolhouse Rd. which runs along the west side of Otis Reservoir. It's a long hard-pack dirt road and dirt roads aren't very belt-drive friendly. The scenery on this road was just OK without a glimpse of the reservoir, and you had to watch for large pot holes. Good if your on a dual sport bike I suppose, which the author might have for all I know. I'll try and skirt the east side and connect to Rt. 57 on our next run and see how it looks.
