If you're looking for a route through West Virginia from east-west or west-east, there's no prettier biking road than Hwy 39. Starting in Lexington, VA, Hwy 39 meanders up the mountains and crosses the WV line, then follows a beautiful mountain river most of the way to Hwy 19 where the New River Gorge Bridge makes for a perfect place for a butt break - though not many actually go down into the gorge.
Starting at the New River Gorge Visitor Center, there's a little known back road that takes your deep into the gorge to the New River, and a small trestle bridge where you get fantastic views of the bridge itself. Then up the other side - beware this is a one way road from the north side of the bridge to the town of Fayetteville, WV. It is so twisty that you never have to fight with sport bikes and the pace is a blistering 5mph as you twist your neck to gain better views of the bridge high above.

West of Fayetteville, you connect with the equally as sweet, though better travelled Hwy 60 toward Charleston, WV, past several state parks, waterfalls and great sweeping twisties.
Along the way is a nice little General Store in Hillsboro, WV, a couple bars in Marlinton, WV, and if you're a Train Buff, take the side trip up old Hwy 1 from Marlinton to Cass, WV to the Cass Train Station - an old steam engine scenic station with working trains and maintenance shop you can visit. If you are an astonomy buff, further up is the Green Bank Observatory with its HUGE radiotelescopes.
