This is a nice ride with lots of riverside frontage following along the Tanana River. It first takes you through North Pole (stop at Santa Claus House if you have been good,) passes parallel to the aircraft flightline of Eielson Air Force Base, later by scenic Harding and Birch Lakes, and a river crossing of the TransAlaska oil pipeline at Big Delta. There are a few pull offs to enjoy the views, except for the Air Force base, which unfortunately prohibits stopping to look at the planes. During the summer, it's possible to see all kinds of aircraft from B-2s to F-16s, as well as foreign allies, due to the their training range operations. The Notty shop is a good stop for ice cream in Salcha. No gas stops available between Salcha and Big Delta, 50-60 miles. Always be alert for moose and other wildlife, which may present themselves at opportune (or inopportune) times. (I've nearly hit two swallows in the evenings near the base that are feeding on insects and swooping down into my path.) After arriving in Delta, ask around and take some of the area roads a couple miles to find buffalo on farms, which are common in the area.
