The ride out of Red Lodge starts innocent enough, but you soon see why Beartooth Highway is called by some 'The Most Scenic Highway in America'! The vistas and canyons are a phographers treat. This was my second trip thru here, and this time I was going east to west and it really is a little more tense if you are like me, and a little height weary, I found myself closer to the centerline than usual. You spend more time on the edge that drops when riding in this direction, bit it is a completely different view!!

Riding into Cooke City is like riding into an old movie set. It is nothing more than a wide spot in the road that is cut thru the mountain. It has several places to eat and shop all crammed into a stretch of about 800 feet. We ate at the BBQ joint on the right side called Bed's & Bun's, I think you could also sleep there somewhere! There are two cute dogs that walk around inside and beg for food, they are very funny!!
Once leaving Cooke City, you may get the feeling you should turn around, as the road gets narrow and in pretty poor condition, but press on and the road will get wider and you will soon be rewarded.
NE Entrance Road and the Grand Loop Road are great rides. Pay close attention to the fact you may encounter anything that lives in the forest!!!
At the intersection with the East Entrance road you will find a store and gas station. Also when you continue south you will be riding along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, take the turn-off to go down to Lake viilage and view from the edge, one of the most beautifull lakes in the USA.
At West Thumb we made the 18 mile trip out to Old Faithful and then reversed and came back to the South Entrance road. It was getting within an hour of sunset at that point and I slowed considerably as we saw deer and moose.
We ended thia day by staying at the Flagg Resort, 2 miles outside the south entrance, it has a restaurant, store and lounge, all housed together in the fron. Then you ride about 1/2 mile into the woods to cabins on the Snake River. Very scenic and restful. No AC(not needed most of the year) and no TV.
