This route will take you through mostly rural areas with a couple small towns along US 301. On the northern portions of US 301 as you get closer to the Ocala area you will pass by a few horse farms. Next you will be riding right through the heart of the Ocala National Forest. Just before the intersection of CR 314 and CR 316 there is a sign on the right for Fort Gates Ferry, turn here. It is 7 miles to the Ferry. The road dead ends into the Ferry dock. THE ROAD IS NOT PAVED. It is kept in good repair most of the year.

If it is rainy season it may not be as well kept. During the fall/winter is a good time to go. The ferry can hold 2 cars or 10-12 large motorcycles. The fee for is $5 for motorcycles. Verry scenic crossing the St. Johns River here.

Although not managed by the Forest Service, the Fort Gates Ferry is a site of historic importance and is reached via forest roads east from Salt Springs. This site is a narrows in the St. Johns River north of Drayton Island and has been home to a ferry crossing for nearly two centuries. The current ferry is a 1910 Sharpie sailboat piloting a 1930s barge that can hold two cars. The crossing is part of the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway.

Once on the other side you depart into an old fish camp that has little cottages for rent. Follow the dirt road about 1/2 mile to end, turn left to CR 309 & turn riight to CR 308 and just passed the intersection id The Italian River Pub. Great little spot to eat and have a cold one. You will be shocked at what you have found.

Great ride out US 17 too SR 40 then back across the St. johns River, only by highway this time! Back into Ocala national forest. Ther are some variables at this point, you can turn east from SR 19 onto SR 42 for a little longer trip, but the road is very nice with a lot of sweepers.

Just a great full day of riding that is a little different.

Forgot that the map didn't draw across the river. Ignore the loop to the north. Sorry.

Note: We've adjusted so the directions do not include the route but actually take the ferry - you'll see a section called "Unknown Road" that would be the water. ...
