This trip was actually a working trip for me as I went to MT to work with the MT Air National Guard in Great Falls. I live near Des Moines, Ia which is where i acually started from. Other than it was a two day ride (1222 mi.) from Des Moines I wont go into that part of the ride it was just interstate travel and boring. We got some good ride info from the locals, they told us it would be in our best interest to ride in to the West entrance to the park and not the East or to have enough fuel so you dont have to stop anywhere on the East side if we went that way.
I must say the route we went was beautiful. We stopped in Lincoln to look at the bear that was hit by a truck, ot's stuffed and very large. there is also a very good dinner in town to eat.
You have to stop by Lake McDonald Hotel it is beautiful! Grand open wood beams lobby huge fire place. Cant tell you bout the rooms we didnt have reservations
:( ,but we walked around looked at the lake and the hotel. Make reservations before you go up there because you will want to stay there.
From there we entered the park it happened to be one of the two free entry weekends they have every year, up and up we went through tunnels, ahead you can see the road climbing and zig-zagging up the mountain.
Going up the from the West side your going to be on the outside lane, if your afraid of hights it could be scary. A lot of the time there is no guard rail, in some places there is only a short stone wall. The scenery is breathtaking and there are places you can pull off to get pics and chat with others.
At the top of course there's a gift lodge and trails you can walk. Nice place to stop for water and snack. All the way out on the East side there is places you can eat lunch.
On the way back you'll be on the inside lane, there are places to pull over on the inside lane as well and you'll see things you missed the first time.
This was a truely breathtaking, fun, adventurouse ride.
Things I would have done differently: got hotel reservations at Lake McDonald Hotel.
Things to watch out for: people stopping in the road to look at animals, constant road work and construction equipment, large animals ie; big horn sheep, elk, bear
Also your cell phone will not work so dont plan on using it up on the mountain for GPS or making any calls.
Montana is very beautiful place to ride other than Road to the Sun so explore as much as you can, I put 1600 mi. on just sight seeing while there. Keep in mind Glacier Nat Park does not open till 15 July.
This is a motorcycle ride in the state of Montana. This motorcycle route has 10 scenery characteristics and other road conditions to help you plan your road trip. This motorcycle map was created by VTP106110 in February. Click here to see other Motorcycle Roads by VTP106110
Just a note about Road To The Sun opening. It changes!! This year 2015 it is scheduled to open June 19.

This IS a great road. Ride it soon before the NPS closes it to private vehicle traffic (think Denali NP). Just so no one is confused, the actual name of the road is 'The Going To The Sun Highway' not road to the sun.
