This large loop starts at Deals Gap Resort in North Carolina. Right out of the gate, covers the infamous motorcycle mecca 'Tail of the Dragon'. 318 curves in eleven miles. Continue to follow 129 to Foot Hills Parkway, where you will have to stop at some of the overlooks to really appreciate what this road has to offer. This route takes you into the Smoky Mountain National Park at Townsend. There is a popular swimming hole at the next intersection before turning onto River Road. This road stays at the same elevation along the river and winds around the contours of the mountains that feed this stream. The water is very refreshing in the summer, you will be robbing your trip if you don't stop if for nothing more than to dip a bare foot into the cold waters and pause to take in this very special section of the park.Continuing to along River Road, you will come upon the Park Headquarters at Sugarlands Visitor Center. There is a interesting display of history and environmental information about the park, and again is worth the stop even though the area can become quite crowded with people and vehicles.Next is to side track out of the park into Gatlinburg for lunch. Gatlinburg has many shops and sites to see, such as the Ripleys aquarium. Today, we will be rock star parking at a restaurant called 'No Way Joses'. It is on the left at the Greystone intersection. Do not park in the handicap (please), but there are lines directly in front of the entrance to the restaurant that the manager doesn't mind filling with several bikes. Park those two wheelers in there tight if you have to. You will all be leaving at the same time anyways!!After having some Quesadillas (steak is my favorite) under the covered patio on the Little Pigeon River, it is time to head back over the mountain on 441. This stretch will take you to the peak at New Foundland Gap and a little side ride to the highest point in Tennessee at Clingmans Dome. The views are great here, so plan to stop. Next the decent into the Indian Reservation in Cherokee, North Carolina. There are parking lots along the river that are great for stopping and stretching, or check out some of the craft shops and eatery's.Follow sweepers along highway 19, or take in the mountainous views on the Great Smoky Mountain Expy to highway 28 which will lead you back to Fontana and the Deals Gap Resort.
