Grass Valley California is home to the Draft Horse Classic held every year at the end of September at their beautiful pine fairgrounds. We spent the weekend admiring the gentle giants and watching them perform. This route only takes a day but there are so many places to get pleasantly side-tracked you may want to allow a weekend. This area is steeped in history. Plan to spend some time in historic downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City. In Grass Valley their's a great eating joint called Charlie's Cafe on South Auburn Street. I had Lobster Benedict for breakfast - WOW!We stayed at the Sierra Mountain Inn in Grass Valley. A nice clean place with parking right in front of your door. Owner's were friendly.Stop and see the original gallows in Downieville, which was constructed in 1885 for the specific execution of nineteen year old James O'Neill, a native of Ireland, who shot and killed his former employer. Downieville has some nice shops to browse through, a couple of casual restaurants, and a rustic saloon. Many mountain bikers flock here to take advantage of the scenic mountain trails so keep an eye out for them.
