This is a simple fun ride on the West side of Tokyo. I have this route leaving from Gate 2 at Yokota AB but in reality, people can jump on this route anywhere as it is a loop. In fact, I live on the route, so I skip Fussa all together.
This route has a little bit of everything. Elevation, winding roads, ramen, and I have seen snow monkeys on this road before!
You can go clockwise or counter-clockwise. If coming from Fussa, I would recommend counter-clockwise. The ride up to Lake Okutama and the Okutama dam is a leisurely ride. You can be on either side of the Tama river, but I stay on the route I show. You cross Lake Okutama, then you are going left quickly thereafter. I think this is the best part of the ride. You are going from about 1700' to 3700' with lots of twists and turns. Like I said, save this for the second half... You'll come out of the mountains and into Akiruno. The fun part is over and you make your way back home.
If the curves are your thing, I kept seeing guys pull into a lookout, turn around, and race back down. If I was younger, I might have joined them.
What can you do along the way? There are rest stops, convenience stores, shrines, restaurants, and look out spots galore. Plenty of places to stop and take a break. Great photo opportunities too!
If you have a full tank, you won't need a refuel. Straight distance is like 60 miles. But if you had to fuel up, do so before getting to Lake Okutama, or while you are in Akiruno.
If you stop at along the way, I am not saying you MUST know Japanese. But Google Translate might help you greatly.
For the groups in the Kanto area, I know this route is not a secret to them. There are a lot of riders out there, so you won't be alone. But this is a fun simple ride with a little excitement thrown in. And like I said... I saw a family of snow monkeys right before the Dam in April 2023. Pretty wild.
