The Outer Banks of North Carolina is an interesting place with plenty to do. Though my goal was to visit four of the lighthouses in a day, one could easily stay for a week and find plenty to do.

My first stop was in Edenton where they have a nice little downtown area with some good places to eat and a great view of the sound.

While visiting Edenton I came across this 1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse that was being moved to a new location on Edenton Bay. These were typical of the style of lighthouse that where around the sounds and rivers of NC.

I started my official lighthouse tour at the northern most lighthouse, the Currituck Beach Light Station.

Shot of the stairs going up to the top.

For a small fee you can climb to the top and get an awesome view of the surrounding area.

Next stop was the Bodie Island Light Station. No climbing up this one.

My third stop was the Cape Hatteras Light Station. Unfortunately, I got there after hours so I was not able to climb up to the top for a look around.

I then caught the Hatteras ferry over to Ocracoke

It was getting late as arrived at the Ocracoke Lighthouse so I decided to head back home. If you decide to take this trip be sure to check the ferry schedule and if you decide to stay on Ocracoke Island (highly recommended) make reservations.

Great route Kevin! We did this one last year and had a blast. I'd have to agree with Tequila John that the beaches were my favorite part. Since most of the route goes through National Seashore, I remember driving for miles along a beautiful beach and not seeing more than 2 people. I'd definitely recommend taking some time to stay at the different little towns along the coast though to really enjoy the whole experience.

Fantastic route and one of my favorites.

That's indeed a nice ride. We did the same ride in the spring of '06...'cept we started at the south end...stayed at Black Beard's Lodge on Ocracoke...highly recommend the place. I don't remember for sure, but wasn't it the Hatteras Lighthouse they had to move due to erosion? What a job that musta been! What I liked most about that ride was the stretch of unspoiled beaches along Hatteras. It's gettin right rare to be able to cruise along the coast anywhere and not be starin at highrises the whole time. Nice post...and thanks for sharin.
