I will start with GET GAS BEFORE YOU NEED IT! Depending on which way you ride it, start in Alliance or Grand Island with a full tank of gas and then just stop and get gas before you need it.
Coming back solo from Sturgis, I was headed to meet up with my wife in Illinois in a couple days, who was on a trip of her own. I got to Alliance and made the left turn on Hwy. 2, looked at the gas stops I passed by and thought, 'I just stopped 30-40 minutes ago, I'll get gas later. Later was Thedford, 125 miles!! Oh I came upon a couple between the two places, one early on I didn't stop at and a couple that were closed!! It was on reserve.
Nebraska's Highway 2 has been deemed one of the 10 most scenic roads in the country. This byway will take you through some of the most remote and beautiful countryside you'll ever come across from Grand Island to Alliance at the byway's western edge.
The Nebraska Sandhills, 20,000 square miles of sand dunes tentatively covered with grass, are the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere. Things are just bigger in the Sandhills—the sprawling ranches, the endless sky, the miles upon miles of rolling grass dunes.
The rolling terrain along side of the river, with sweeping turns and the occasional frieght train passing by, made me feel very alone out there that day, and it felt really good! That is until I went on reserve!!!!

I have ridden this rout several times, and driven semis many times. Wonderful place to see wildlife, deer coyotes, and lots of road kill. Be careful at night.

I traveled this route a couple of years ago and it was obvious not to pass any gas stations. We stopped at one location that was an unmanned pump that took credit cards and paper money. I saw more cows than people. Traveling at night, we went 100 miles without seeing 1 car. It is an eerie place. Going north on US 385 through the Sand Hills, there were tumble weeds blowing across the road. Due to the winds we were riding leaned over as if we were in a curve. It was an interesting place to say the least. There was a coal train every two - five minutes and the air was full of the smell of money AKA Cow Manure.
