This trip was our wedding anniversary weekend. The first leg goes through some great back country scenery to include Amish farm lands, Land between the lakes in Kentucky, and the Mississippi River. This section was to just visit some old friends in Poplar Bluff, MO. If interested, there is a great steak house there (Colton). The second leg goes from Poplar Bluff to Hermann, Mo. Once you hit Hwy 19 you are surround by beautiful National forests. Now this route is full of hills, twists and turns. A very relaxing country ride. If you are not the most experienced I strongly recommend maintaining the speed limit. The roads are very smooth and very few potholes. Along the way I recommend stopping in Cabool, it use to be a hub to Rte 66. The buildings there are covered in murals that represent the era and are rich in history. Once you reach Hermann, Mo., you top a hill that over looks the whole town and you feel transported to an old German town, with old European style building and dozens of wine vineyards. Here we stayed at Maggie's Hilltop bed and breakfast, which is nestled back off away from town with a country setting. Ms. Maggie will treat you to some of the best home cooked breakfast you have ever had. Also, while in Hermann I recommend doing the Hermann wine trail. You can ride around to all the wineries or they have a trolley bus that you can ride that takes you around. Great weekend with the spouse, if you want to just kick back and relax this is the trip for you.
