If you're in the San Antonio area and you're pressed for time, you can squeeze in this short ride that will take you through good scenery and a cute small town. San Antonio is sprawling; it's a long way from the center of town to any good riding roads. So, if you don't have much time, you can't go far. But, this road will scratch the itch in your throttle hand. The views don't begin in earnest until you're several miles outside of loop 1604 on Potranco. Then, you'll enjoy gently rolling hills through farm and ranch land. Once you've turned onto 471, you'll test the edges of your tires (just a little) through fields and over (usually) dry, wide Texas creek beds. From 471, you'll turn north onto 211 and drive through canyons and enjoy views that'll make you think you're further from the city than you are. On 211, until you reach 16 (Bandera Rd.) you'll be traveling alongside Government Canyon State Natural Area, a nice place for a hike. Traveling southeast down 16, you'll soon reach the small town of Helotes. Stop at Floore's Country Store for a cold drink or a great concert (check their schedule).By the way, if you're looking for urban scenery, pay no attention to the fact that urban/residential is indicated on this map; that's just a warning that you'll be driving through some 'burbs for portions of route. Additionally, calling anything on this a mountain is a stretch; but, 'dramatic hills' is not an optional descriptor.
