Reelfoot Lake was formed when the region subsided after the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–1812, and that the Mississippi River flowed backward for 10-24 hours to fill it. Reelfoot Lake State Park is located in Lake and Obion counties of extreme northwest Tennessee near Tiptonville. The park's 280 acres are broken into 10 segments located along 22 miles of the Reelfoot Lake shoreline. The Airpark Inn (a great place to stay) is located on State Highway 78, ten miles north of Tiptonville. The other sections of the park including the visitor and interpretive center with its auditorium, picnic and camping areas, located along State Highways 21 and 22. Our majestic national symbol, The Great Bald Eagle, makes its winter home on Reelfoot Lake. Eagle sightings are a common event from December through the first of March. Cypress trees located on the lake make a perfect nesting area for this predator, and the many varieties of prey enable the eagles to return to Reelfoot Lake year after year.Heading east on Hwy 54, the next interesting destination along this ride is Paris, TN. A 60 ft. tall replica of the Eiffel Tower stands in a park in Paris. It looks just the real one in Paris France but smaller. Worth stopping for a look and a photo. On down the road, still heading east on Hwy 79, is Paris Landing State Park. Paris Landing State Park is an 841 acre park located on the western shore of the Tennessee River, which is dammed to form Kentucky Lake (160,000 acres). This is a beautiful park and great place to stay overnight and if you do, I recommend staying in the park’s own Inn. The Paris Landing Inn has 130 guestrooms with balconies that provide a commanding view of Kentucky Lake. There is also an excellent restaurant located in the Inn.Midway on this ride you turn north onto the “Land Between the Lakes” trace. This 45-mile long paved highway begins at the south entrance of LBL near Dover, TN. And ends at Grand Rivers, KY. On some maps, it may be listed as Kentucky 453. On the Trace, you can see all kinds of wildlife including deer, buffalo, elk, and more. Be sure to stop in at the 1850’s Home Place and the Great Western Iron Furnace, one of the many interesting side stops located along the Trace. When you get to Grand Rivers, KY, most folks stop at Patti’s Restaurant for lunch or dinner. Patti’s is known though out the region as one of the best Kentucky Lake area restaurants. Stop and try their famous two-inch thick pork chop and flowerpot bread. They make a hell of a good smoked cheeseburger too.Out of Grand Rivers, head north to I-24 and go East towards Nashville. It’s interstate all the way to Nashville. I didn’t have time to stop anywhere other than the TN-KY rest stop but there are tons of things to do and interesting places to visit along I-24. As for Nashville, need I say more? There is an infinite amount of things to do and see in Nashville and you could spend days there an not see everything. Ride safe and remember you are invisible to most drivers.
