I have no doubt this would be a fine ride and yes it does get you to skyline drive, sort of.
It bypasses the Skyline Drive heading south and picks up the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke heading back north. You need to continue north to route 64 to reach the southern end of Skyline drive. If you want to hit the Skyline Drive from the north you can pick it up in Front Royal heading South. There is a $10 fee for motorcycles and a 35mph speed limit. (The $10 pass is good for one week from the day of purchase.) Blueridge Parkway is just as beautiful, FREE and 45mph speed limit. BTW - there is a Sleep In just off the Blueridge Parkway in Roanoke we stayed at that gives a discount to bikers - convienient place to stay overnight.

2008 - The BRP is closed in one section:

A rockslide and roadway failure has closed the Parkway to all activities including foot traffic and bicycling between the entrance to Craggy Gardens Picnic Area and the entrance to Mt. Mitchell State Park.

I did enjoy my ride back in July 2008, until I hit the Skyline. I didn't mind the fee so much, but the road was in terrible shape, as a result of numerous road repair sites.the views were great, but the continual stopping for holes (big holes) in the road distracted and caused me to arrive real late in Pa. I'm sure the repairs have been completed by now, and this will make good ride.  3.5 of 5 only because of the construction.
