Starting out from the Southwest Side of Chicago can be a little difficult. I started this one day trip to unwind from a stressfully week. Unfortunately it was during a heat wave. But jumping on 294 southbound into 80/94 the early morning ride the best choice. 80/94 is a never ending road of repairs, it is also a major truck route to get around lake Michigan. After a short ride I got off on Ripley street and went north. I followed along to county road and went toward the lake. The area is a mix of commercial and residential so some truck traffic can be an obstacle. Once you get past all of the trucks the ride becomes more enjoyable. I continued on Rt 12 north, the road is a mix of 2 and 4 lanes that eventually goes back to 2 lanes until you get to Michigan City Indiana. I wanted to get close to lake Michigan so I took a road marked on the map that runs along the lake, that was until I came across a flooded road from a near by marsh. Riding my ultra classic and being alone I decided to turn around. I found a route through Beverly Shores, the road was good and the canopy of trees very picturesque. The area is residential and some areas are private, the early morning was perfect with no traffic. After walking the beach I rode along the lake, the folks who have homes here have awesome views. The road ended and took me back south. The next road paralleled Rt. 12 but had alot of heat buckles, deer, and was uncomfortable ride. The first chance I got I got back on 12. If you are looking for a 'Dunes' experience stop and Mt. Baldy its on the left .Rt 12 travels through Michigan City and on to New Buffalo, the ride is great once you get away from Chicago traffic. New Buffalo has a lot to do if you need a break. Unfortunately this is a day ride and going home is either the same way or jump on the expressway. The ride did what I wanted to do and I got a recharge..looking forward for the next one..(and I will use a camera instead of my phone)

The best of the best. These folks have ridden and shared more roads than any other ORJ member this month.
