Left Denton,Tx on friday morning early and cruised to Tucumcari,NM for the first night (nice town with good priced hotels). Day 2 we took a leisurely drive to Red River,NM through beautiful plains and foot hills of the mountains, hwy. 434 and 518 are great rides with tons of twists and great views. Reached Red River early in afternoon and spent a leisurely afternoon. Day 3 had a good weather day to ride through Carson National forest which took us past the Rio Grande Gorge and Mesa Verde National Park. After checking in to hotel at Cortez took a short ride over to 4 Corners USA. So I guess this trip also went to Arizona and Utah?? Day 4 we took a ride on the San Juan Skyway from Cortez,Co through Telluride,Ridgeway, and Silverton,Co. The San Juan Skyway is absolutely awesome; without a doubt one of the top ten rides in the US of A. We booked a second night in Cortez so we didn't need to pack everything. If you haven't had a chance to ride the Skyway it is a most!!! Day 5 got into a bunch of rain so had to re-plan route around mountains unfortunately, ended up Santa Fe for the night. Day 6 hot day riding from Santa Fe to Amarillo,Tx. Rt 104 in New Mexico from Las Vegas,NM to Tucumcari is a real nice road; 106 miles of lonely stretch of road with nice views and NO cars. Day 6 was a HOT ride home down 287 from Amarillo to Denton/Highland Village,Tx! Except for minor bike problems a GREAT trip.

Have ridden most all of this route. Tucumcari to Telluride and the loop back is a nice ride for sure. Definately don't want to by-pass the Conchas Lake State Park without stopping. BUT the trip from Denton to Tucumcari is mostly uneventful, striaght and flat I-40 & US 287!! And had to travel it TWICE! I certainly wouldn't reccomend that portion to anyone!

Looks good on paper. Because of this website and this information I am going to ride this route from Oklahoma City the middle of June. Recovering from Cancer treatment and can't wait to hit this trail. Going with 1 or 2 other guys and will report back when I get home.
