In May 06' I was spending the night in Savanah and going to Helen the next morning. I decided that I wanted to try a different route. Heading out US 17 across the bridge was a nice start. Picked up US 321 in Hardeeville, further north I went the more rural it got. In Estill I went west on SC 3. This was great choice, very rural, good asphalt, no traffic, also called River road. Continued to SC 125(Augusta Hwy) and noticed this road would become Atomic Hwy. I didn't know that I would be riding thru a nuclear power plant site. But that is nicest part of the ride! Very forested with sweeping curves. Just don't be alarmed when you see a guard shack in the middle of the road!! I saw it coming and was about to slow down to stop, when I saw the car ahead of me not even slow down! I slowed anyway and proceeded thru. No stopping, I guess it's there for a different time. I continued thru Jackson to North Augusta. Next time I think I will stop and check out the Radcliff Plantation State Park, just south of North Augusta.

The guard gates at the SRS have been taken down. Estill is roughly half-way; buy fuel at Bo Bops and while off your bike get some of their fried chicken- it is really good. Heading North on 3, you can make a left turn onto Revolutionary Rd; it is 2 lane, pavement in good shape, it follows a ridgeline with great views and cuts a few miles off the route. Rev Rd dead ends in Clariant Rd about an eigth of a mile from 125. Make a right on it and then a left onto 125. While on Clariant on the right side just after the railroad tracks is an artesian well that makes a nice pull-off spot.
