This is a great day trip if you are attending Americade or just staying in the village of Lake George, NY. You should embark about 1.5 hours before lunchtime, as this trip makes a stop at Long Trail Brewery for lunch! Starting off in the village of Lake George, route 4 will take you into Rutland, VT (hardly scenic, but wait for it..), where you will drop onto Route 7 to 103 and into downtown Ludlow, VT. There, you will grab Route 100 and begin the scenic part of this tour. VT bore the brunt of Hurricane Irene in the fall of 2011, and as of the summer of 2012, much of the damage was still present, from uprooted houses to washed out terrain - Route 100 takes you through all of this. Less morbidly, though, this road is a great driving road, with lots of turns and great scenery. You'll take a brief departure from 100 and join 100A, continuing to the intersection of 100A and Route 4. There, you will stop in at the Long Trail Brewery for some classic American fare and taste some of the best beer in New England. After lunch, you'll take Route 4 and reconnect with Route 100 going north. You'll continue for awhile until 100 intersects with Route 125. 125 is another very scenic road in VT and has the added benefit of having what appears to be an original A&W Drive In Restaurant. Take a break at this establishment to take in a little bit of Americana and indulge in a creamy root beer float!Continue on 125 North-West until it intersects with Route 7 and take that North to Route 17 - one of the best driving roads in all of New England. Route 17 will take you through the rest of VT and cross into New York by way of a bridge over Lake Champlain. Follow signs to Route 9N and take that road going south. You'll pass by Ticonderoga where, if time allows, you can stop in at Fort Ticonderoga and take a tour of an important piece of US History. From Ticonderoga, you continue on 9N south and follow Lage George all the way back to the village of Lake George. As for timing during the year, if you aren't at Americade (which is in June), this ride would prove to be a great fall time tour for leaf-peeping.
