Seattle to Barlow pass is a good day ride into the west side of the Cascade mountains. The road ends at Barlow pass and is paved to this point. The road actually continues north to Darrington, WA and in the past you could do a loop trip but floods have damaged the road past Barlow Pass (2003) and it is not expected to open past the pass until sometime in summer of 2007 (if that early). At Verlot is a Ranger Station with info on the area for trails and logging roads of which there are many in the area. The last 5 miles of the road to Barlow pass are closed until spring due to snow most years and usually opens sometime in April but can be later. At Barlow Pass a gravel road (closed to motorized traffic) leads to Monte Cristo an old mining town site (4 miles). From this road are three great day hikes of around 8 mile RT distance. These hikes are best from July through October as snow usually covers the trails at other times. Note: Some Images are from hikes in the area.
