John Denver sang these words.....
Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place, I be-long
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
These are fitting words for this motorcycle ride, as the roads traveled are truly country roads, and they are such a pleasure to ride on.

This route starts in Germantown, Maryland and the notable towns along the way are:
Harper's Ferry, West Virginia
Winchester, Virginia
Martinsburg, West Virginia
Hagerstown, Maryland, and
Frederick, Maryland
We picked a beautiful day to ride as the skies were blue with just a few passing clouds.

Route 180 from Frederick to Harper's Ferry is a very pleasant road to travel on as seen in the pictures below:
Ever wonder where the 'Blair Witch Project' was filmed? It was done in Burkittsville, Maryland....
You never know what you will see along the way...in Winchester, we saw a scooter gang...
We also stopped at Full House Cycles in Winchester(http://www.fullhousecycles.com/) to admire the fancy bikes...
We really enjoy seeing old and historical buildings along the way...
Yep, we ride a 2003 Kawasaki 1500 Vulcan Nomad....
It's 3 PM in Hagerstown...and we were hungry!!!

So we stopped at Barefoot Bernies (http://www.barefootberniesusa.com/) for some good food...

Meet the staff at Barefoot Bernies.....
The manager...

The waitress...

and the cook....

Route 40 from Hagerstown to Frederick is a really nice road....

Ok, ok.....yes, we were only going 80 mph! You have to love the speed effect on the shadows!

We always try to plan our rides to go against traffic...look at those poor commuters going north as we are heading south on I-270...

The country roads have taken us home........

See ya next time!!!

Trivia / folklore point: Country Roads according to local legends past down through the years, was inspired by a while traveling to a family reunion along the Rockville Pike, and Clopper Road.

So I guess you picked the perfect theme for your ride!

My my how the landscape has changed since then.

Living in the area, I've ridden all the roads in this route. Generally, it is a good, fun ride, but as discussed in the other comments, you have to ride it on the right day and it would be better avoiding the down town areas. For more open "country roads" keep heading west and ride the roads in western MD. The two lane roads out there are much more suited for motorcycle riding.

I just rode this route...and no offense to you personally, but that was awful. I think it is more than a little misleading to put "country roads" in your title when there are few if any actual country roads on your route. Basically, if you enjoy riding ruler straight highways, sitting in small town traffic for about 5 hours...stopping at about 600 stoplights...and knowing there are some nice twisties hiding in plain sight, but you sure as heck aren't on them...well, this is the ride for you. If you want to see the beautiful off the beaten paths of VA, MD and WV...steer clear of this route at all costs. You have been warned.
