Shoe House, PA
A Shoe House???? My wife and I had to ride up to York, PA to see this for ourselves! Yep, there really is a shoe house just east of York, off the Lincoln Highway. We had a great time on this ride.
The Shoe House is only 48' long and 25' tall, and there are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area and a kitchen in the structure's five mini-levels. The current owner runs tours ($3.60 per adult) and sells ice cream treats from an ice cream parlor on the ground floor. We took the tour and enjoyed seeing the interior of this building, with all the original antique furniture. For further information, check out their website at http://www.shoehouse.us/

Although the Shoe House was our desination for the day, we saw a lot of very interesting sights along the way. That is the beauty of riding motorcycles on back roads. You never know what you will encounter. The roads on this route, by the way, are great for motorcycles, with the exception of the Lincoln Highway (Rt. 30) between York and Gettysburg, PA due to road construction. So what did we see and do? Read on....
Oh where do the buffalo roam?
We We were surprised to see a herd of buffalo off to the side of the road as we approached Lineboro, Maryland.
These buffalo are raised at the Twin Springs Farm, and there is a little country store there which sells buffalo meat, and related items. You can check their website at http://www.twinspringsbuffalo.com/index.html for more information.

This picture (taken just north of the buffalo farm) shows the type of roads and scenery you can expect along this route.
And these pictures were taken on Route 624 along the Susquehanna River

We headed west on PA Route 462, which runs parallel to Route 30. Both roads are considered to be part of the Lincoln Highway. We didn't see anything in the way of obvious advertising for the Shoe House along PA Route 462, so we had to really keep our eyes peeled on the street signs.
This is the street sign we were looking for...

And this is the view of PA Route 462 from that spot...

This is the small sign which guided the way for us, and the second picture is of the road which leads to the Shoe House...

And as we rode down the road, the Shoe House rose up from the corn fields!!!
We took the tour, and had some ice cream cones, then we set off for York, PA in search of the Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub for a good meal. The Harp & Fiddle is on this road and we just have to find it...
Ahhhh, here it is!

I like Irish food, and I certainly liked the food here....
I had some delicious Irish Potato Soup and a nice sausage dish...

If you want to see the menu, etc., you can visit the Harp & Fiddle website at http://www.theharpandfiddle.com/
After the meal, we headed home on Route 30, and as I said earlier, this road is not good for bikers. It is rough due to a lot of construction along the way. Once we got to Gettysburg, PA and Route 15, the roads improved greatly.
That's all for now!

We have ridden this ride with numerous variations and have always enjoyed each and every stop along the way. We live in Lititz, PA and are within an hour of each point-of-interest. We always use this ride as a "just get out and ride" if we have no other destination in mind.

This is a great ride though a lot of routes are in the mix. Not open roads to much and there is a fair amount of traffic. I did a reverse of the ride starting in Westminster and heading along 140 and back into York that way. It is worth it!! I had a great time and the owner of the Shoe House was so sweet!
The issues I had were with the gpx file. I am not sure of it was the orignal poster or this user but I kept getting a lot of what I call 'oops' moments, missing turns, other stops etc... My garmin would NOT recalculate unless I followed the exact route. So again I am not sure if is me but I try to believe i am technically savy.
You can check out my ride log on this one at http://www.bikerworlds.com/LilTyke/view_blog/6441/
I know of a few more people who are interested in this ride so I do plan on doing it again.

I rode this today with a variation of sorts since I live in Thurmont, Md. Up 194 to Route 30, then to 462. I drove past the Shoe House sign once! 646 had nice views of the river. 216 have nice views of rolling hills and was nice riding. Red Lion has a little railroad museum. 84 back to 30, which took me back to Hanover. A worthwhile ride.
