This should be a two day trip since there is a lot to see and do while up on the mountain as well as doing the drive. If you really want to see this trip in the truest perspective you have to ride a motorcycle. The best time to go is the last weekend in October, Talihina has it's annual fall festival and the town is turned into a bikers/motorcycle den. This trip actually started on I-40 exit to Highway 69 south to Eufaula. At Eufaula we took 69 Business to SR9 on to Enterprise, we took 71 south through Robbers Cave on to Wilberton, south on 2 from Wilberton to SR1. Take SR1 left to Talihina. Once in Talihina you need to fill your tanks, eat lunch and set off on 271 north about 8 miles up the road you will find the entrance to the Skyline Drive in the Ouachita Forest (Pronounced Wa-shi-taw). The run is 58 miles to Mena Arkansas. You'll past the Queen Wilhelmena Lodge where you can get some food at the little train depot. You will need to use cash or checks, the depot does not take debit or credit cards. Proceeding east from the lodge the road down and out of the mountains is a wild ride daown a 13% grade that has a lot of twists and turns. make sure you take a good camera, you will need it.
