This trip is very possible in a weekend but you are doing yourself an injustice by not staying in Santa Fe a whole day. Leaving Colorado Springs you will head through Florence and right past Bishop's Castle (a trip in itself). The road there is mountainous and, if one is so inclined, peg-scrapping. Head to Colorado City for an ever so slight I-25 jaunt where Rt 160 will take you up to 10K' over La Veta Pass. The farmland around the CO/NM border is spectacular as you head south. Make sure to allot time for lunch in Taos at La Cueva Cafe (135 Paso Del Pueblo Sur)...you're welcome in advance. The ride along the Rio Grande from Taos to Santa Fe will having you turning around to do it again (no kidding). To top it off it is primo wine country. When in Santa Fe the best place to stay is the Guadalupe Inn. It is in walking distance (10 minutes) from everything great downtown and has covered, secure parking. I could write a book on the great places to eat and things to do in SF so I'll save that. Once the fun is over and you head back north things open up and make you feel very minuscule. Poncha Pass in CO will again tickle 10k'. I've done it rain and shine and always love it. Once over the eastbound Rt 50 snakes along the Arkansas river where you can see gold panners and river rafters. All in all an amazing trip.
