One of my personal favorite rides w/my wife. This is definately and all day ride. Lots of small farming communities w/many older, 100+year, homes to see. Our first stop is in Dixon. Great breakfast diner a few blocks off the main route. From Dixon, Rt. 2 follows the Rock River and has rolling hills and scenic overlooks of the river. Between Dixon and Oregon is a small town called Grand Detour. This is the site of the John Deere Historical Blacksmith Shop. We stopped in Oregon just to get off the bikes before heading to savanna. Old piano factory by the river converted into a mall. Old time candy store, coffe shop, restaurant, and antique shops. Next stop is Savanna. Must stop at Poopys. This place is the bikers haven. Bar/restaurant, indoor/outdoor seating, outdoor stage for bands all summer long. Camping area behind the place. They also have a retail shop where you can buy leather, sweatshirts and parts. And if you plan on being there a while, you can even get tattooed or pierced. Leaving Savanna and crossing into Iowa offers more rolling hills and countryside. Once you cross back into Illinois, Rt. 30 becomes pretty flat and straight. Lots of options on this trip. Historic stop opportunities in Dixon, Oregon, Savanna. Fuel stops are pretty good, however, Nothing between Mt. Morris and Savanna(approx. 40 miles) and nothing between Rock Falls and Shabbona(again, about 40 miles. I am always up for this ride so if any one is in the area and has a day to spend on the bikes, let me know.
