This route incorporates the Natchez Trace in segments down to Natchez and all the way back to Jackson. One of our favorite meeting places is the old Craft Center on the Trace at Ridgeland. We'll head down the Trace to Raymond, getting off just before Raymond at Airport Rd and Clinton-Raymond Road. Minutes later your sitting in the square in downtown Raymond. A friend turned me onto the next leg of this trip from Raymond down to Port Gibson using Old Port Gibson Road. Great road with enough twisties to keep you interested and plenty of shade for warm summer days. Just when you're ready for a stretch, you've made it to Port Gibson off Hwy 61. Depending on the time you left, you may also be ready for something to eat. Head downtown to Main Street/Market Street and look up Georgia's at the Depot. Fried chicken and sides later, you're ready to roll. Depending on your departure from Jackson, you may want to wait to eat in Natchez or pack a lunch for our next stop, Windsor Ruins. Take Rodney Road out of Port Gibson and you're back on a shady road heading for the ruins of an antebellum home which survived the Civil War but not a smoking guest. There are grand columns, some still with ornate iron works, surrounding a big empty nothing. Great spot for water break or picnic, if you didn't stop in Port Gibson.Next, we'll head to Natchez using the Trace and Hwy 61. On the way to the Trace from Windsor, you'll pass Alcorn State University, where the giant staircase of Windsor have been moved. I like to head right down to Canal St in Natchez and find food, if I haven't eaten at all on the way down. Here you'll find catfish, BBQ, and plenty of other southern staples. Next we'll head over the mighty MS River to Vidilia, LA. An impressive span to cross and we get to do it twice. With a quick return to Natchez, you can now visit it's charming homes. They really are worth a stop. Very fascinating inside and out. Finally, we're headed back to the Trace to head back to Jackson. We typically keep to the Trace for a laid back ride home. We'll stop at Rocky Springs for a break and then complete our final hour refreshed. This is a great ride either alone or with your friends. A great route to ride and to enjoy some of MS history while you're at it.
