This route takes you up the Pemigewasset River and through the White Mountain National Forest on the Tripoli Road to Waterville Valley and back to Plymouth. Rt. 3 is a pleasant rolling rural road with great views of the Pemi River and surrounding mountains. Road surface is smooth. The Tripoli road climbs up over and is a twisty Forest service road that is paved for the first 3.5 miles. It then becomes a gravel road for 4.9 miles climibing to Thornton Gap (1519 ft). The 4.5 mile descent to Waterville Valley is a narrow twisty paved road through a beautiful forested area. Once you reach Waterville Valley the road is smooth sweeping ride along the Mad River back to Campton and Plymouth.
