This trip across northern New Mexico is on a well-maintained, mostly two-lane, US highway. It begins in the vicinity of 4 Corners where the land is relatively flat and dry, but with picturesque rock formations such as the famous Shiprock, which is a well-known volcanic plug. The stretch between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras (TA-to-TP) is my favorite and includes the second-highest paved road in New Mexico. East of TP, you cross the Rio Grande on the iconic bridge that was featured in the motorcycle classic "Wild Hogs." Stop and take the walk out onto it, for sure. After Taos, you get to do the bottom half of the Enchanted Circle, and if you have time you might as well do the whole loop, which circumnavigates Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico. You'll ride right past Philmont Scout Ranch, right past The Whittington Center (the NRA's largest shooting range), and you won't be too far from Capulin Peak National Monument, which features one of the coolest decreasing-radius turns in the world on the dead-end road that spirals up to the volcano's rim.

There's lots of side adventures to be had along this route, so plan a day to just ride it or a week to enjoy many stops along the way.
