About 3000 miles altogether, I took 2 weeks, 4 days down and 4 days back with a few days stay in So. Cal. I prefer to rough it, camping all the way. There is plenty of free camping, I only paid once for a camp spot. About half the time, a few hours befoe dark I keep an eye out for dirt logging roads (there's lots along the 2 lane backroads I travelled) and just turn down one and head back until I can't see or hear the main road.I didn't have much of a plan when I left, except I had to stop near Portland and the destination was San Diego and L.A.. I knew roughly the route but kept it loose and off-the-cuff, i.e. Oregon coast, cut across N. Cal and down the Eastside of the Sierra Nevadas, back up HWY 1/101 in So. Cal and then across central Cali and towards home via eastern OR.I wear my riding gear the whole time (really sucked in Death Valley) so I only pack a few days' worth of socks and underclothes. 2 pair of shorts and a pair of sandals. small cook gear, mostly stopped and ate at roadside eateries. Tiny tent, sleep bag and pad strapped to the back seat. RADAR DETECTOR (paid for itself several times) GPS unit to look for alternate roads and ETAs to waypoints and digital camera. Of course I packed other hope-you-don't-need-it gear like first aid, tire repair, small tools, etc.Going south, I crossed paths with a rider on his way to Arizona and we rode together for a couple of days. Coincidentally, heading back north, I met up with another random rider IN THE SAME PLACE!!! and we rode together for a couple of days too.Read the whole story with pictures here: http://countersteer.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
